The parish church of Cascia and Masaccio's Triptych

Just 14 km from our hotel there is an important Romanesque parish church, built in the Middle Ages along the route of the ancient Setteponti road: it is the parish church of San Pietro a Cascia.

The structure is enriched externally by an elegant portico, which is quite unusual for this type of church, and by an imposing bell tower.

The interiors are sober and essential, with spaces well distributed between monolithic columns, pillars and single-lancet windows from which light enters inside.

On the walls there is a fresco from 1420 attributed to Mariotto da Cristofalo, Masaccio's brother-in-law, while behind the altar an ancient golden crucifix dating back to 1200 and a finely crafted stone tabernacle, attributed to the Brunelleschi school.

At the back of the church is the Masaccio Museum with a rich collection of works of art and liturgical vestments from churches in the local area. The Triptych of San Giovenale stands out above all, the first work of the young Masaccio, in which the rules of perspective in painting are applied for the first time.
