Discovering the Colossi of Vallombrosa: Excursions Among the Monumental Trees
Exploring a region can mean many things. Among them is the discovery of its trees, silent witnesses to stories lost in the mists of time, rooted in the earth they inhabit and reaching skyward in search of sunlight, air, and tales. In Vallombrosa, right near the Rifugio La Foresta, we are fortunate to have a collection of monumental trees. These have been chosen for their age, size, and their historical, cultural, and scenic value. Immersing yourself among them will bestow upon you a sense of peace and serenity, bringing you closer to the history and culture of our land. Each tree has a story to tell, an anecdote from its life or a particular significance in the landscape's context. They are not just a physical feature of the territory but also a living part of its identity and heritage.
Located near the Hotel Rifugio La Foresta in Vallombrosa, the Arboreto offers a deep immersion into nature's wonders.
Among its most unique treasures stand the majestic Calocedrus decurrens (known as the giants), which merge into a single tree with a 7.5-meter circumference, the towering "Thuja gigante", the "Pinus lambertiana" that reaches a remarkable height of 47 meters, and a grand sequoia.
While exploring this green haven of Pratomagno and the iconic Abbazia di Vallombrosa, visitors can access, by reservation, a free guided tour lasting about an hour and a half, overseen by a forest ranger. During the summer months, two tours are scheduled daily, whereas in other times of the year, timings can be arranged.
