Balze del Valdarno

In 20 km from our hotel you can see the Balze del Valdarno.

They are particular reliefs with the most bizarre shapes, composed of stratified deposits of sand, clay and gravel, formed by erosion following the drying up of the lake that covered the valley between Florence and Arezzo about two million years ago.

This strange phenomenon also intrigued Leonardo Vinci so much that he described them meticulously in his notes and depicted them in some of his paintings such as the Mona Lisa.

Today they are visible in various areas of Valdarno Superiore including in the Reggello countryside in the Montanino area, here a beautiful panoramic view can be admired near the church.

There are also various itineraries to do on foot, the most evocative is located in Castelfranco di Sopra, about 25 km from our hotel. It is the Acqua Zolfina path, a fairly simple circular route, about 6 km long.The starting point is from the Castelfranco di Sopra post office car park.
